I did not end up finishing this book because of the sad ending, however most of the book provides interesting insight into a political period when Burma (Myanmar) was under British military police rule. Many of the Burmese dressing and eating traditions represented in the book are still done today. If you are to visit Myanmar, it is a good read to understand what happened there and you may even see some of the old British buildings falling into disrepair.
